Obituary
William Tate Doggett

Raleigh, North Carolina

Age 85.
Died 2/10/2025.

William Tate Doggett August 25, 1939 – February 10, 2025 In the early morning hours of February 10th, with his family by his side, “Bill” Doggett stepped into eternity as God called him home. Born in High Point, NC, he was an accomplished architect, graduating from NC State University School of Design in 1966 and receiving his license to practice architecture in 1967. He opened his practice in Waynesville, NC, and moved to Raleigh in 1976. Bill designed numerous schools, churches, office buildings, shopping centers, and residential projects across the state from Franklin, NC to the Outer Banks. He was one of the first architects in NC to receive LEED Accreditation (green design) and was dedicated to producing sustainable buildings. He mentored many ‘budding’ architects over the years, sharing his knowledge and skills of the industry at his firm, Doggett Architects. Bill is survived by his wife of 47 years, Harriette Hartline Doggett. They married in May of 1977 at Franklin Presbyterian Church, one of the many churches he designed. He was a devoted and loving husband, who, even in his last days with Alzheimer’s, greeted Harriette with, “Hey, beautiful,” each morning. Bill is also survived by his three children: daughter Laura Doggett Stowers (Mark) and their four children, Mayson, Luke (Sarah), Claire and John Mark; daughter Christy Doggett Pitts and her two children, Ford and Caroline; and son Chad Wesley Doggett (Catherine) and their two boys, Tate and JR (James Ruston). Luke and Sarah gifted Bill with his first great-grandchild, Maeve, last August. Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Nannie Tate Doggett Noland, who loved him dearly, and his father, Joseph Granville Doggett, whom Bill remembered as a devoted dad who worked hard and provided for his family. Following his parents’ teachings, Bill instilled these same principles in his own family, by loving them well and working hard, often long hours to provide a good life for them, resulting in many memories filled with fun, family times together. Bill modeled the perseverance necessary to achieve your dreams, and supported each member of his family with time and encouragement so they could accomplish their own. Bill was a quiet man, with a dry, quick wit. He loved gardening and spent many early morning hours tending to his vegetable garden at his former residence, lovingly referred to as ‘Doggett Farms’. His tomatoes were the envy of the neighborhood and his productive crops provided Harriette many hours of canning. He also enjoyed photography, boating, fishing, listening to jazz, Bill Withers, Al Green, and traveling with dear friends that were also a part of his life. A memorial service for Bill will be held on Friday, February 21st, at 3 p.m. at North Raleigh United Methodist Church, 8501 Honeycutt Road, Raleigh, NC, followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall of the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Transitions Life Care of Wake County, https://www.transitionslifecare.org/donate/ who helped care for Bill in his final days, or the Alzheimer’s Association of Wake County https://www.alz.org/?form=FUNDHYMMBXU . The family would also like to thank his two caregivers, Haddy and Binta, who so kindly and sweetly assisted in his care over the past year.
