Sylvia Burrell Lacey, born on June 20, 1940, in Safford, Arizona, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2024, at the age of 84 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Sylvia, a beacon of love and creativity, dedicated over 30 years to nurturing young minds as an elementary school teacher. Her remarkable contributions to education were highlighted when she was honored as North Carolina Teacher of the Year, a testament to her passion and dedication. Sylvia's academic journey began at Arizona State University, laying the groundwork for her influential career in education. Beyond her professional achievements, she was a talented artist, expressing her rich inner world through painting and pottery, which brought joy not only to her but also to those around her. Described as beautiful both inside and out, Sylvia was not only a cherished mother but also a friend to all. Her sweet spirit and soft-spoken nature won her the hearts of many throughout her life. She is survived by her loving daughter, Jennifer Lacey Cashion; grandchildren, Katelyn and Claire Cashion, and Brian Lacey; siblings, Linda (Clay) Van Daren, Rosalie Campbell, Debbie (Drew) John, and Andrew (Christine) Burrell. Sylvia was preceded in death by her daughter Sharon Lacey, son Christopher Lacey, son-in-law Michael Cashion, parents George and Inez Burrell, brother Larry Burrell, and brother-in-law Steve Campbell. A service to celebrate Sylvia’s life will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, located at 1050 M.L.K Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC, on November 9 at 4pm. Her legacy as a devoted educator, talented artist, and loving family member will be cherished and remembered by all who knew her.
