Obituary
Sue Whittaker Davis

Raleigh, North Carolina

Age 91.
Died 2/14/2023.

After a long and fulfilling life, Sue Ballard Whittaker Davis of Raleigh, NC passed away Tuesday February 14, 2023 at the age of 91. Sue was born on October 24, 1931 in Portsmouth, VA, the oldest of three daughters of Everette Ballard Whittaker and Susie Alexander Whittaker. She graduated from Churchland High School and Norfolk Business College. Sue married Bill Davis on June 24, 1950, and they shared a love and partnership of 65 years. She was a proud homemaker, balancing her roles as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and later a devoted grandmother, with her work in banking and various bookkeeping positions. Sue dearly loved her family and adored caring for her grandchildren, and they discovered that no one could walk as fast as their Grandma, make a better pound cake, nor clean a home as efficiently and effectively. She was a “tough cookie,” a determined woman with a sweet spirit. After living much of her life in Eastern and Central Virginia, Sue and Bill retired to Southern Pines, NC and later moved to Raleigh. Sue was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her oldest son, David Everett Davis and by her two sisters, Betty Whittaker Cross and Martha Whittaker Matthews. She is survived by son Michael Leigh Davis (wife Sue) of Charlotte, son John Ennis Davis (wife Pam) of Linden, VA and daughter Susan Davis Weaver (husband Greg) of Raleigh. She is also survived by her daughter in law Linda Davis of Anderson, SC and sisters in law Nancy Davis Ames of Daphne, AL and Betty Ann Davis Stephenson of Fredericksburg, VA. She has eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson, as well as a host of nieces and nephews and their families. A Memorial Service to honor Sue will be held on Saturday March 4 at 11 am at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church at 2209 Fairview Road, Raleigh, NC 27608. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you consider making a donation to a favorite charitable organization. The family appreciates the support of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church and the loving care provided to Sue by the staff of Rex Rehab and Nursing Care Center. We also thank Transitions LifeCare as well as the staff of Independence Village of Raleigh for the care provided to our mother. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres…And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. " 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7, 13
