Obituary
Robert N. Zajac

Timberlake, North Carolina

Age 87.
Died 3/13/2022.

Robert Norbert Zajac, 87 years old, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2022, in Raleigh, NC. Robert was born on August 3, 1934 in Gary, IN, to the late Edmund & Marie (Eckert) Zajac. He graduated from Froebel High School, and worked for 33 years as an inspector for US Steel, Gary Sheet & Tin Mill. Robert also worked as a butcher for Tittles in Gary, IN, and as a custodian at Iddings Elementary School in Merrillville, IN. Robert served in the Army after high school and then as a volunteer fireman (Lieutenant) for the Merrillville Fire Department. He also volunteered for many years as equipment manager for the Senior League World Series, which was hosted at Eckert Field in Gary, IN. Robert was well respected in the community. Robert was married to Mildred (Spirovich) Zajac, whom he loved very much, for 67 years. They moved to Durham, NC in 2002. Robert loved his family very much and was always willing to help them and anyone in need. He was a very humble man, proud of and devoted to his family and church. Robert’s family meant everything to him, and the feeling was mutual. He enjoyed collecting coins, working around the house, and watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Robert loved to tell the same jokes over and over again, but they most always brought a smile to the faces of his family and friends. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund and Marie, his brothers, Eddie, Johnny, Walter, and Eugene, and his sisters, Lily, Genevieve, Clara and Leona. Robert is survived by his wife, Mildred, sons Bob (Patty), Joe (Lynne), grandchildren David (Beckie), Regan (Shawn), Zac (Kellye), Seth, Matt (Haley), and Stephanie, and great grandchildren Caitlyn, Colton and Lincoln. He also had many nieces and nephews. Robert is loved very much and will be deeply missed by all his family. He will remain in our hearts forever. There will be a memorial service on April 8, 2022, at 2:00pm at St. Matthew Church in Durham, NC.
