Obituary
Philip Geyelin

Raleigh, North Carolina

Age 70.
Died 12/21/2025.

Philip (Phil) Geyelin September 29, 1955 – December 21, 2025 Philip (Phil) Geyelin passed away peacefully in Raleigh on December 21, 2025, surrounded by loving family and friends, with live guitar music playing in the room. He was born in Washington, DC, on September 29, 1955, and spent part of his early childhood living in London and Paris. Phil worked for more than half his career as a freelance cameraman in network television, primarily with CBS News, specifically on 60 Minutes. He was known for his professionalism, composure under pressure, and commitment to fairness and truth in storytelling. From an early age, Phil had a strong interest in photography. At 12, he began working at Sullivan’s Toy Store in Washington, DC, saving his earnings to purchase his first camera, an early reflection of his independence and work ethic. Phil attended Georgetown Day School and later studied film at the University of Southern California, graduating in 1981, where he developed the foundation for his career in television. He remained a proud USC Trojans supporter throughout his life. Outside of work, Phil had a lifelong love of music, particularly the blues. He was a self-taught guitarist who enjoyed playing in his free time and collected guitars over the years. After moving to North Carolina, he developed a deep appreciation for bluegrass music and regularly attended live performances. He also enjoyed cycling and mountain biking. Phil shared his life with his wife, Mary. Together they enjoyed traveling, attending live shows, spending time at the beach, and gathering with neighbors and friends. Evenings were often spent outdoors by their fire pit, surrounded by nature. Phil was a fifth-generation Washingtonian and the son of Philip Geyelin Sr., a journalist and former editor of the editorial pages at The Washington Post, and Cecilia “Sherry” Parker Geyelin, whose family had long ties to Washington, DC. Phil is survived by his wife, Mary Geyelin. He had two children from previous marriages, Olivia Geyelin and Christopher Geyelin; a granddaughter, Goldie Geyelin; stepdaughters, Sadye Hardin and Chloe Nelson; two step-grandsons; his siblings, Mary Sherman Willis, Milo Geyelin, and Lili Geyelin; and four nieces and nephews. His many friends in the Raleigh cameraman community will miss him at their weekly gathering. A celebration of life will be held in Raleigh the weekend of January 30. Details to follow.
