Obituary
Paul Shick

Durham, North Carolina

Age 86.
Died 3/12/2025.

Paul Leonard Shick, 86, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2025. He was reunited in eternity with his beloved wife of 64 years, Renetha Mae Butters Shick (Renee), who preceded him in death by just one year. Paul was born on October 14, 1938, in Mayport, Pennsylvania, to the late Frank and Ruth Shick. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, William (Bill) Shick, Robert (Bob) Shick, and Bernard Shick. Paul, known affectionately as “Bud” to family and friends, was a man of deep faith, unwavering kindness, and a warm sense of humor. For the last 33 years, Paul and Renee made their home in Durham, North Carolina, where they were devoted members of Grove Park Chapel. Paul faithfully served as an elder and sang in the choir, sharing his love of music with his church community. He was also an active member of Gideons International for more than 20 years, dedicating his time to spreading faith and encouragement. Above all, Paul was a devoted follower of Jesus and lived his faith daily. He loved sharing daily devotions with his family, guiding them in their walk with the Lord. His faith was the foundation of his life, and he was a true example of kindness, generosity, and love. Music was an integral part of Paul’s life. From an early age, he was involved in choral groups, quartets, opera, and theater. Coming from a musically gifted family, he was not only a talented vocalist but also an accomplished trumpet player. Paul was a devoted family man and is survived by his children, Kevin Shick (Jennifer) of Knoxville, Tennessee; Paula Zuber (Rob) of Boone, North Carolina; and David Shick (Lisa) of Tampa, Florida. He was a cherished grandfather to Alyssa King (Clayton), Brittany Charnley (Michael), Brooke Cespedes, Michael Zuber (Michaela), Erika Sparkman (Chase), and Kelly Zuber, and a beloved great-grandfather to Myla King, Makenna King, Braydon King, Vera Charnley, and Brylynn Sparkman. He also leaves behind many other loving family members and dear friends. Paul was a fun-loving man who found great joy in spending time with family and friends, sharing meals, and playing games—especially cards. His warmth, humor, and kindness will be deeply missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Gideons International in his memory at www.gideons.org/donate The celebration of Paul’s life will be held at Grove Park Chapel in Durham on March 24 at 5 PM.
