Obituary
Mi Xie

Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Age 58.
Died 9/28/2023.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the peaceful passing of Mi Xie on September 28, 2023, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Mi, beloved wife, mother, and friend, touched the lives of those around her with her joy and unwavering strength. Born on April 21, 1965, in Nanchang, China, Mi was the oldest of three children. From a young age, she embraced her role as a big sister, caring for her younger siblings with devotion. She would pick them up from school every day and often treated them to special outings, such as trips to the movies, creating cherished memories during their childhood. She and her future husband, Wei Chen, grew up in the same hometown, their lives intertwined from an early age. They embarked on a lifelong journey of love and companionship, marrying on February 7, 1990, in their hometown. Mi pursued her education with unwavering dedication, earning her undergraduate degree in Biology from Jiangxi University in 1987 and her first graduate degree in 1989. Mi and Wei made the life-changing decision to immigrate to the United States in 1994, where Mi continued her pursuit of knowledge and earned another graduate degree from the Medical College of Ohio in 1997. After settling in North Carolina, Mi embarked on a remarkable career at GlaxoSmithKline as a drug discovery researcher, dedicating over two decades of her life to finding treatments and cures for infectious diseases. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Mi was a loving and devoted mother to her two children, Sherry and Jack. She cherished her role as a parent and instilled in her children the value of hard work and education. Mi's love and support for her family knew no bounds, and she took immense pride in their every achievement. Mi enjoyed simple pleasures such as cooking, gardening, taking on home improvement projects, indulging in binge-worthy television shows, and gaining financial wisdom through investment podcasts. Her evenings were often filled with leisurely walks around the neighborhood after dinner, where she found solace and peace in the world around her. Mi is survived by her husband, Wei Chen; children, Sherry and Jack Chen; parents, Shijian Xie and Rongfen Liu; siblings, Chunming and Hui Xie. Mi will be remembered as a beloved member of the community and her legacy of love, strength, and resilience will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. May she find eternal peace, and may her memory continue to inspire us all. A service to celebrate Mi’s life will be held at Maplewood Cemetery, Section 2, 1621 Duke University Rd, Durham, NC at 10 am on Sunday, October 8, with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and share memories of a remarkable woman who will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Mi's memory to Habitat for Humanity. https://www.orangehabitat.org/give
