Obituary
Margaret Joan Spoon Martin

Fuquay Varina, North Carolina

Age 89.
Died 6/11/2023.

With profound sadness we announce the passing of our mother, Margaret Joan Spoon Martin, (89), of Fuquay Varina, NC. She transitioned on June 11, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Born September 29, 1933, to parents James Harold Spoon and Gladys Loretta Presson in Monroe, NC, she was an only child. Her early years were spent living on the Presson Family farm, off Hwy 601 S. between Monroe NC and Pageland SC. This area of Union County was known as Mountain Springs Community because of the Baptist Church with the same name. Margaret was raised by her maternal grandparents, Samuel Rufus Presson and Sarah Virginia “Virgie” Collins, who she adored! She lovingly referred to them as “My Momma and Poppa”. In 1947, this spirited young lady moved to Charlotte to live with her mother, Gladys Spoon. In 1951, Margaret graduated, as Valedictorian, from Charlotte Technical High School and was offered the Angier B. Duke Scholarship of Merit to Duke University. Margaret met William James “Bill” Martin in Charlotte, NC, where they married on October 6, 1951. They had four children, three daughters and one son. Margaret loved being a homemaker and mother. She always repeated, “My greatest accomplishments are my four children”. Margaret is the beloved mother of Vicki Martin, Dawn M Bates (Lee), William J. “Marty” Martin, Jr. (Laura) and Loretta “Retta” Clontz (David). She is the cherished grandmother, “Grammy”, of Nicole “Nikki” Collins (Scot), Keegan Callahan (Heather), Blake Ammons (Michelle), Chelsea Bates, Caitlin Martin, Ember Martin and Logan Martin and great grandmother of Brianne and Braden Collins and Rylen Cole Ammons. After the children got older, Margaret worked, briefly, in retail for Ivey’s Department store. But most of her working years were spent as a Bank Teller/Customer Service representative for First Union Bank in the Charlotte-Matthews area. She retired from First Union after 30 plus years of service. Margaret loved spending time at the beach, watching and attending Notre Dame football games, listening to country music and going to concerts, reading, playing Scrabble, and spending time with her canine children. Margaret was a happy person, always with a smile on her face. Margaret will be buried in the Presson Family plot at Faulks Baptist Church Cemetery in Marshville, NC. A graveside service is planned for the future.
