Obituary
Lawrence K. Layton

Pittsboro, North Carolina

Age 80.
Died 7/20/2024.

Lawrence K. Layton, 80, of Fearrington Village, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2024, surrounded by family, after a brief illness. Larry was born and grew up on Long Island, NY, to William and Elizabeth Layton, the eldest of four children. After high school, he attended Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering. While attending Clarkson, Larry met his future wife, Barbara, an education major at NYSU in Potsdam. They celebrated their 56th anniversary on December 30, 2023. Their three children are Jennifer, Sara Blackwell (Gordon) and John (Kathleen). Family has always been the center of Larry and Barbara’s lives, and they welcomed six grandchildren: Anna, Ben, Laura, Arabella, Beckett, and Holden. Larry’s 35-year career with DuPont resulted in several family moves within the US and Canada. In 2002, Larry and Barbara retired to Fearrington Village, and in 2004, Larry completed his MSW at UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Social Work. As a licensed clinical social worker, he counseled older adults. After retiring from this second career, Larry immediately began serving on Weatherfield’s HOA board as vice president. Larry is also survived by brothers Jeffrey and Robert, sister Linda Greves, and several nieces and nephews. His joys included travel with Barbara and friends, jogging, relaxing at the beach, and surf and fly fishing. He greatly enjoyed science fiction books and movies, and he was an avid UNC basketball fan. Larry will be remembered for his love for family and friends, as well as his dedicated service to career and community. A funeral service will be held on August 9, 2024, at 2:30pm, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, with reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a food bank or to the CJD Foundation.

For additional information or for service details, please reach out to the family directly.
