Obituary
Jon Charles Van Schoor

Cary, North Carolina

Age 79.
Died 5/19/2024.

Jon Charles Van Schoor, known to his friends as "Jack," “Breeze,” “Ace,” “Smiley,” and to his grandkids as “Pop Pop,” passed away peacefully on a Sunday in his home in Cary, North Carolina, at the age of 79. He is survived by his loving wife of almost forty years, Cheryl Barnes Van Schoor; his sister, Susan Clark Thies; his three children, Jon Clark Van Schoor, James Frederick Van Schoor, and Marjorie Elizabeth Aikman; and his seven grandchildren Jon, Caroline, Jacqueline, Vivienne, Violet, Evan, and Jason. His children were raised in Charlotte and Cary, North Carolina. Jack was also a proud great-uncle to Abbott. A graduate of the political science program at Tennessee Wesleyan University, Jack remained close with his fraternity brothers from Sigma Phi Epsilon. His proudest accomplishment in business was creating and running his company, MedCovers, from which he retired at the age of 62. Jack was a poor sailor, an avid reader, and a grand storyteller who enchanted those around him with his tales and life lessons. He was a man of many jokes who loved to laugh, and his family has been hard-pressed to find a single photo of Jack that approaches anything akin to a serious face. With his kind heart, friendly looks, and an innate gift of gab, Jack made new friends everywhere he went. Jack was a craft beer lover and the seventh person to receive a plate on the wall at the Flying Saucer in Raleigh when it first opened. Jack went on to sample hundreds of craft brews alongside his friends at the Saucer, retiring his crown at thirty plates when his health began to slip. In his younger days, Jack was a dedicated volunteer and wish granter for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a cause close to his heart. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in Jack's honor. We will miss Jack’s wit tremendously. His friends and family will take solace in knowing that his legacy of generosity and love for storytelling will be remembered and celebrated by all who knew him. An informal celebration of life is to be held at the Flying Saucer in Raleigh on June 28, 2024 at 2 pm.
