John Gerald Welsh

Raleigh, NC — John Gerald “Jerry” Welsh, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, coach, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on December 30, 2025, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Catherine (Zappia), and their children Tim (Meghan), Marykay Wells (Kevin), and Ann-Marie Sales (Tony). He will be forever cherished by his grandchildren Elissa Wells Nance (James), Gabriela Wells, Isabella Sales, Anthony Sales, Francesca Sales, Griffin Welsh, Tessa Welsh, and Laina Welsh, and by his great-granddaughter, Taylor Nance. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Marie Welsh, and his sister, Beverly Adams. His memory lives on through many nieces, nephews, friends, and countless former players, colleagues, and students whose lives he shaped. Jerry was born on March 15, 1936, in Malone, New York. A 1954 graduate of Massena High School, he excelled in both baseball and basketball. He attended Ithaca College, where he played men’s basketball and graduated cum laude in 1958 with a B.S. in Physical Education and a minor in History. He later earned a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from St. Lawrence University in 1964. On November 28, 1959, Jerry married Catherine Margaret Zappia at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Massena, New York. That same year, he returned to Massena High School to begin his coaching career, leading the varsity basketball program from 1959 to 1968. During that time, his teams compiled a remarkable 146–32 record, won seven Northern League championships, and completed an undefeated championship season in 1965–66. In 1968, Jerry joined Potsdam State, first as head men’s golf coach and assistant basketball coach, and then as head men’s basketball coach from 1970 to 1991. Over 22 seasons, he transformed the Bears into a national powerhouse, posting a 494–143 record, winning eight SUNYAC titles, and making 15 NCAA Tournament appearances. His teams reached five national championship games and won Division III national titles in 1981 and 1986, including an undefeated season in 1985–86. From 1985 to 1987, the Bears won 60 consecutive games, an NCAA Division III record and the second-longest winning streak in college basketball history. Welsh also coached internationally with USA Basketball in 1981 and 1985. Jerry also served as athletic director beginning in 1977, helped establish the Potsdam Athletic Hall of Fame, and was later honored with the naming of Jerry Welsh Gymnasium in 2001. His impact was further celebrated with the premiere of The Bodacious Bears documentary in 2022. In 1991, Jerry became head coach at Iona College, leading the Division I Gaels for four seasons before retiring from coaching in 1994. After relocating to Raleigh, North Carolina, he taught at Duke University, served as an ACC official observer, and worked as a scout for the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers. Jerry was inducted into five Basketball Hall of Fames and was a three-time Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Nominee and 2025 Finalist. Beyond the accolades, Jerry’s greatest legacy was his generosity, humility, and devotion to family. He took immense pride in his grandchildren, never missing a game or practice and often volunteering as their coach. He loved golf, cherished time with friends, and eagerly anticipated his annual trip to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four. Known for his infectious personality, sharp sense of humor, and genuine kindness, Jerry never met a stranger and made everyone feel included. A devoted Duke fan, Jerry attended Duke basketball and football games regularly and deeply valued his relationships with the athletic department staff and student-athletes. Jerry’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered. The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to Dr. Drew O’Donnell and his staff at Duke for the years of his dedicated support and exemplary care. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 16, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh, North Carolina.
