Obituary
Janet Fleming Dopler

Raleigh, North Carolina

Age 96.
Died 6/18/2025.

Janet Maxine Fleming Dopler, 96, of Raleigh, NC and previously of Pittsboro, NC, passed away peacefully in the early morning of Wednesday, June 18th, 2025. Born on April 16, 1929 in Steubenville, OH, Janet was the daughter of the late Harlan and Eula Fleming. She was a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and earned a BA in Education. It was during her time in college where she met her future husband, John Dopler, of East Liverpool, OH. During her early years, she loved horseback riding and boarded her horse at the city park. She loved the big band era and often went to dances in and around her hometown. She grew up in the Presbyterian Church and was always a church member wherever she lived. Janet often volunteered her time, with some of her favorites being a docent at Woodlawn Plantation, a National Trust for Historic Preservation property in Alexandria VA, and at Habitat for Humanity of Chatham County, in Pittsboro. Her many activities included oil painting, gardening, crafting, antiques, travel to the Shenandoah Valley in VA, studying family genealogy, playing Mahjongg with friends in Fearrington Village, and spending time with her family. She still enjoyed some of these hobbies into her final years at WaltonWood Lake Boone in Raleigh. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Col. John R Dopler, USMC; her brother Lawrence A. Fleming, and her parents. She is survived by her son John Charles Dopler, daughter-in-law April Leigh Layne, and grandson John Nikolas Dopler, of Raleigh; four nieces: Pat Anderson of Madison, OH, Debra Fleming of Perrysville, OH, Barbara Gizzo of Westerville, OH, and Becky Fleming of Seattle, WA, their families, and cousins and their families in western OH and VA. A handbell choir service will be held in her honor this autumn at Chapel in the Pines Presbyterian Church, date TBA. Janet will be buried alongside her husband at Arlington National Cemetery in the coming year. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Chapel in the Pines Presbyterian Church, Pittsboro, NC; Habitat for Humanity of Pittsboro, NC, the American Heart Association, and Transitions LifeCare (Hospice) in Raleigh, NC. Janet will be remembered as a loving mother and dedicated wife, and a true friend.
