Obituary
Hugh Patrick Toland

Cary, North Carolina

Age 82.
Died 2/18/2025.

March 12, 1942 – February 18, 2025 It is with deep respect and fond remembrance that we announce the passing of Hugh Patrick Toland, beloved husband, father, Poppy, brother, and uncle, who left us peacefully at his home in Cary, NC, on February 18, 2025, at the age of 82. Born in Kerrykeel, County Donegal, Ireland, on March 12, 1942. Hugh emigrated from Ireland to New York, where he built his life and family before moving to North Carolina in 2008. He was a man of quiet strength, a true gentleman who embodied hard work, determination, and a tender, loving heart. Hugh's deep religious faith and his desire to always see the best in others were the foundations upon which he lived his life. He was a hero to those who knew him, always offering kindness and support to family, friends, and even strangers. Hugh was married to his loving wife, Mary (Cahill), for 54 years. Together, they built a life full of love, laughter, and family. Their partnership was one of unwavering devotion, with Mary by Hugh’s side through all of life’s joys and challenges. They shared countless memories, from raising their children to traveling together. He is survived by his children, Aidan and Laura (Anthony Pomes). Hugh cherished his role as a father, always guiding and supporting them with love, wisdom, and encouragement. His grandsons, Nicholas and Vincent, brought him immense joy and filled his heart with pride. Hugh (Poppy) loved spending time with them sharing his wisdom, and teaching them his gentle ways. His connection with his grandsons was a bond that will forever be treasured. He was also deeply loved by his numerous nieces and nephews, whose lives he touched with kindness and warmth. He is also survived by his siblings: John (NC), Brian (Wales), Colm (Ireland), Martin (England), Mary (Ireland), and Evelyn (NY), each of whom shared in the love and memories of their dear brother. Hugh’s bond with his siblings was strong, and the love they shared for one another transcended distance and time. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charlie, whose memory will forever be cherished by his surviving family. A proud nursing home administrator, Hugh dedicated much of his life to caring for others, using his knowledge and experience to improve the lives of countless patients and colleagues. His compassionate nature extended beyond his professional work, as he also volunteered with Transitions Hospice, where he made a lasting impact with his kindness, empathy, and unwavering support. Outside of his career and volunteer work, Hugh found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved jogging, tending to his garden, and feeding and watching the birds that visited his yard. These quiet moments brought him a sense of peace and fulfillment. Hugh also loved watching the Hurricanes hockey games, and his love for the game was something he enjoyed sharing with family and friends. Hugh’s sense of humor was always present, and he had a remarkable ability to bring lightness and laughter to every moment with family and friends, making them feel at ease and valued. The family would like to extend special thanks to Alta and Brandi, the caregivers from Transitions, for their loving care and support during Hugh’s final days. A service to celebrate Hugh's life will be held at Mother Teresa Catholic Church (1125 Mother Teresa Dr, Cary, NC 27519) on February 28, 2025 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mother Teresa Catholic Church or Transitions Life Care . Hugh's memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, Hugh.
