Obituary
Gregory A. Altman

Cary, North Carolina

Age 81.
Died 8/24/2025.

Gregory A. Altman passed away on August 24, 2025 at the age of 81. He shared 47 wonderful years of marriage with his loving wife, Patricia Beasley Altman, whom he deeply adored. He was born in 1944 in Queens, New York, to Jack and Diana Altman, proud liberals who worked for civil rights, labor rights, and economic justice. They imbued those principles within him. He grew up in Great Neck, New York, alongside his brother Stephen, and in 1962 left home to attend the University of North Carolina, an institution that would hold a special place in his heart for the rest of his life. After graduating and spending a year in law school, Greg joined the U.S. Air Force in 1968, where he served for four years as a computer programmer and analyst, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon completing his military service, he returned to New York and embarked on a successful career in computer software, and then in manufacturing, and general management. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Patricia Beasley, whom he married in 1978. Greg concluded his professional career as President of Bristol Babcock, a mid-sized Connecticut-based company specializing in the design and manufacture of process control equipment. Greg was immensely proud of his accomplishments and found great joy in his career and the people he worked with. After ten years as president, he retired in 2002 at the age of 58 due to health concerns. He and his wife, Pat, then relocated to North Carolina – close to his alma mater, UNC. In retirement, Greg rekindled friendships with several of his college fraternity brothers, and the group grew as close as they had been in their university days. He found great joy in travel, cooking, golf, and playing bridge. He had an intense interest in politics and public affairs. Greg is survived by his wife, Patricia, and numerous nieces and nephews, including Diane and Jeannette Beasley, who he loved as if they were his own daughters. The newest family members, Jeannette’s husband Kareem Khan and their wonderful son Cameron, have brought him friendship and joy. In his later years, he also became close with his nephew Sean Beasley and Sean’s son Ryan, who showed him great warmth and friendship. Greg loved life and knew he was fortunate for the life he led and the relationships he developed.
