Godofredo Ng

Godofredo Tan Ng MD, of Raleigh North Carolina, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on April 17, 2023. His death was sudden and unexpected, and the result of a cerebral aneurysm. Godofredo was born in Boac, Marinduque Philippines on November 10, 1937. The fourth of five children of Maria Tan and Kiu Ng, he excelled at school from a very young age. With the financial support of his older brothers, he attended the University of the Philippines to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in 1958 and his Medical Doctorate degree from the University of the Philippines Medical School in 1962. In 1962, Godofredo married his college sweetheart, Anita, and moved to the United States. Godofredo completed his internship at Ravenswood Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, and his General Surgery residency at Wilmington Medical Center in Wilmington, Delaware. Fred, as he was better-known, moved to Raleigh NC in 1967 to serve as an In-House Surgeon at Wake Memorial Hospital (now Wake Med). In 1969, Fred ventured out to start his own practice, then founded the Wake Surgical Center in 1974. Fred was on staff at Raleigh Community (now Duke Raleigh), Wake Med and Rex Hospitals, and was the first Asian to be elected as President of the Wake Memorial Hospital Medical Staff in Raleigh, NC. Fred reveled in his work as a surgeon, he loved his patients and he enjoyed growing the surgical practice until his retirement in 2003. In 1995, Fred Ng co-founded the Carolina Medical Mission along with his wife and close friends, Drs. Arturo & Rosemary deLeon. Fred served as CMM’s Surgical Coordinator from 1995-2020. Fred was honored to serve over 25+ years with the Carolina Medical Mission, the University of the Philippines Medical Class of 1962’s surgical missions, and other prominent medical missions in the Philippines and in China. These missions provided medical care to over 100,000 patients who otherwise would have had little to no access to healthcare. Some of his professional memberships included Diplomate, American Board of Surgery; Fellow, American College of Surgeons; 50 year Member, American College of Surgeons; Charter Member, American Society of General Surgeons; Founding & Charter Member, Society of Philippine Surgeons of America. Generous, caring and hospitable only begins to describe Fred Ng’s nature. In the mid -70’s, Fred was instrumental in organizing the Filipino community in the area to create a Philippine American organization, which became a precursor to the current PAANC (Philippine American Organization of NC). He loved sharing a great meal and a good story with his dear friend Monsignor Gerald Lewis. He enjoyed traveling the world with friends and family. And he was never happier than when his grandkids were all gathered around him, having fun, bantering excitedly and all claiming to have the honor of being Pop-Pop’s ‘favorite’. Fred Ng was preceded in death by his parents, his older brothers Santiago Ng and Victor Ng, sisters-in-laws Meding Ng and Gilda Ng, his nephew Robert Ng, grand niece Alyssa Ng, brothers-in-law Ricardo Ang, Patrick Yang and Claro Chua, sister-in-law Olym Chua and mother-in-law Maxima Chua. Fred Ng leaves behind his wife of nearly 61 years, Anita (Chua); and their 5 ​​​Children: ​Cheryl Ng O’Malley (Donald O’Malley); ​​​Peter Ng (Kyong Lee); ​​David Ng (Eden Jover); Cindy Ng; and ​​Joseph Ng (Onelia Jose); and their 8 Grandchildren: Cara O’Malley, Ryan O’Malley; Olivia Ng, Matthew Ng; Gabriel Ng, Erin Ng, Simon Ng; and Hailey Ng. Additionally, Fred leaves behind an older brother Francisco Ng, a younger sister Victoria Ng Chua, and a half-sister Haliner Ho, many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews, many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, including Philip & Farida Chua, Eddie & Sylvia Chua, Vicky Ang, Mina Yang, Jose Jr & Tessie Chua, Sony & Francis Jao, Loree & Wyda Chua, Vicente & Chari Chua, Saturnino Chua, Manuel & Maribel Chua, and Ricky & Arlet Chua. The family will be available to welcome guests in the church atrium beginning at 12:00pm.
