Elizabeth Turnburke

Elizabeth Hutson Turnburke (August 19, 1932-October 10, 2022) Beth grew up in Richmond, VA and attended St Catherine’s school followed by four years at Wellesley College. Her courses at Wellesley prepared her for a job in Washington, DC, where she met her husband Charles Pell Turnburke from St Paul MN. His railroad career took them to Washington, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, finally settling in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. She eventually retired to Wilmington, North Carolina with her husband, who predeceased her in 1995. They were married almost 40 years. Beth was an expert “mover” having moved 13 times before 1963. Through the years she enjoyed all aspects of Christian community including bible studies and the opportunity to pray for and with others. Her children recall her gift of hospitality which included more than one stranger being invited over for dinner! Her home, wherever it was, was always a welcoming one. She is survived by four children; Palmer Loux and Laura Harrison of Havertown PA, John Turnburke of Raleigh, NC, and Sarah Wagner of Greensboro NC. She loved knitting, living near the beach, and receiving summer visits from her children and 10 grandchildren. Beth was also thrilled to see the arrival of two great grandchildren. She enjoyed membership in the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, both the Delaware and NC chapters.
