Obituary
Carl Spangler

Raleigh, North Carolina

Age 88.
Died 8/14/2025.

On August 14, 2025, Carl Barry Spangler passed away at Springmoor Retirement Community at the age of 88. He was born on September 2, 1936 in York, PA to Woodrow and Gladys Spangler, where he enjoyed a happy childhood and made some friendships that lasted a lifetime. Upon his high school graduation, he joined the US Navy, serving proudly for three years. He was stationed on a destroyer, the U.S.S. Gearing, where he began learning engineering skills that prepared him for his future employment at IBM. He also accumulated many stories from his Navy days that he loved to share with friends and family throughout the years. After the Navy, Carl spent his career working for IBM, where he started as a CE and eventually made his way into management. Carl had a love of spending time on the water, and some of his happiest years were spent in Beaufort, NC with his partner, Pat Kindell. Carl was a member of the Beaufort Oars Rowing Club. He participated in many outdoor activities in Beaufort including boating, bike riding, and especially enjoying a cold beer with his friends there. He is survived by his 3 daughters, Lori Spangler, Sue Burcher, and Karen Jarrell. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, August 31 at 2pm in the Auditorium of the Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community, at 1500 Sawmill Rd., Raleigh, NC 27615. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bonehenge Whale Center in Beaufort NC, using the link here https://bonehenge.org/donate/ or by mailing a check to: 275 W Beaufort Rd Ext, Beaufort, NC 28516.
