Obituary
Bertha Mae “ Bert” Lassiter

Raleigh, North Carolina

Age 104.
Died 10/14/2023.

Bertha Mae Ammons Lassiter, also known as “Bert,” peacefully passed away on October 14, 2023, at the age of 104 in Cary, NC. She was born on September 26, 1919, in Rowland, NC, to her loving parents Asa and Blennie Ammons. Bert was preceded in death by her father, mother, sister Evelyn Jackson, brother Leon Ammons, former husband Ralph B. Lassiter, and her daughter Carol Lemons. Bert will be fondly remembered as a loving mother, fun-loving friend, and avid bridge player. Education was extremely important to Bert. She graduated from UNC-G (formerly “Women’s College”), and proudly served as a teacher, library assistant and teacher’s aide in NC. She was a proud and enthusiastic supporter of East Montgomery High School football, even after her three children had graduated from there. She never missed a home game for many years and was recognized by the school for attending 100 consecutive home games. In her free time, Bert enjoyed indulging in her hobbies, which included reading, playing cards (especially bridge), doing sudoku, and dancing. She was involved with her community of Candor, NC, and her church. She truly loved the beach, spending many summers at the family house at Long Beach, and in later years, going on family beach trips with a houseful of 14-17 folks. The most important thing to Bert was family. Bert was a faithful member of Candor United Methodist Church, where she found fellowship and support. She was an active member of the church choir and especially loved singing in the church’s Christmas cantata for many years. Her faith played an important role in her life, providing her with strength and guidance. Bert is survived by her children, Susan Lassiter Lampley and Ralph B. Lassiter, Jr (Ann), as well as her son-in law Richard Lemons, her grandchildren Stephen Lemons (Megumi), Richard Lemons, Jr. (Leigh Ann), Matthew Lemons, Gentry Lassiter (Rebecca), Leigh Lampley Martin (Kane), Krista Lassiter Carr and Will Lampley. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Vivian and Joshua Lemons, Emma and Rose Lassiter, and Lily Martin. We especially appreciate the love and care Bert received from Joy Reid, Adelaide Young, the staff at Brookdale Senior Living, Rex Hospital, Glenaire Nursing Care, and Transitions LifeCare. A celebration of Bert’s life will be held on November 18 at 2:00 pm at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 4801 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC, followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church of Raleigh or Transitions LifeCare (Hospice) at http://www.transitionslifecare.org/donate/ Bert’s legacy will live on through the lives she touched, the knowledge and stories she shared, and the love she gave. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
