Obituary
Bernard James Roach

Cary, North Carolina

Age 87.
Died 12/20/2024.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bernard James "Bernie" Roach, 87, of Raleigh, North Carolina, on December 20, 2024. He passed peacefully surrounded by his beloved wife, Joan, and a cherished daughter. Born on September 2, 1937, in Onondaga, New York, Bernie was the third child of Paul and Doris Roach. His childhood unfolded in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Syracuse area, where he developed a lifelong love of adventure and a mischievous glint in his eye. Following high school, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy as a flight navigator, a role he often recounted with characteristic humor, noting it never required him to set foot on a ship. After his naval service, Bernie met the love of his life, Joan. Together, they embarked on a successful journey, with Bernie excelling in sales across various industries. He ultimately found his true passion in the dynamic world of sports, thriving in sales and marketing. While he retired from New Era Cap, his zest for life never faded. Retirement years were filled with thrilling travels, challenging rounds of golf, and countless friendships forged through his natural charm and infectious humor. Bernie's love for his family was unwavering. He cherished every moment with Joan, their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His passion for cars was legendary, and he proudly celebrated his Irish heritage, evident not only in his vibrant red hair but also in his captivating storytelling. After four decades in Raleigh, he and Joan relocated to Florida to be closer to their daughter Christine and her family. Bernie leaves behind an enduring legacy of love. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Joan; his children, Suzette Roach (Ron), Christine Fordham (Paul), Terry Brookins (Al), Jennifer Baker (Steve), and Betsy Roach; and his thirteen cherished grandchildren: Anna and Carson Roach-Howell; Sean, Colin, and Ian Baker; Timothy, Scott, and Brandon Fordham; Zoe, Quinn, Hana, and Nevan Brookins; and Bernie Roach. His joy multiplied with the arrival of four precious great-granddaughters: Lyra and Juniper Joan, and Emmy and Clara. He also shared a very deep bond with his surviving sister, Susan Leonard. He was predeceased by his sister Doris Rice and brother Paul Roach. Despite facing numerous health challenges with unwavering courage and optimism, Bernie never lost his zest for life or his trademark wit. His positive spirit, resilience, and unwavering love touched the lives of all who knew him. The world has lost a truly exceptional man. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to all who provided compassionate care and support during Bernie's illness. While deeply missed, his legacy of kindness, laughter, and unwavering love will forever reside in the hearts of those fortunate to have known him. There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, January 11th at 2:00 pm at the Good Shepherd United Church of Christ in Cary. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brightspire Glenaire Foundation (https://www.kintura.org/donate) where they provided kind and loving care since returning to North Carolina.
