Obituary
Andrew Mackie

Raleigh, North Carolina

Age 75.
Died 11/18/2025.

Andrew Firth Mackie (March 6, 1950–November 18, 2025) Raleigh, North Carolina – Andrew F. Mackie passed away at the age of 75 on November 18th, 2025, at his home in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was born on March 6, 1950, in Pittsburg, Kansas, to parents John W. Mackie, Jr., and Mary Wipperman Mackie. Andrew spent his childhood in Pittsburg and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1968. Andrew attended college at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. Upon returning to Kansas after college in 1972, Andrew married Kathleen Urankar Mackie, also of Pittsburg, and embarked on a career at Buildex Lightweight Aggregate in Ottawa, Kansas. Andrew served as vice president for Buildex, retiring in 2012. Throughout his career, Andrew was an active member in multiple professional and industry organizations, including the Kansas Masonry Association and the Expanded Shale, Clay, and Slate Institute (ECSI), for which he served as past president. Andrew and Kathleen lived in Ottawa until 2020, when they moved to Raleigh, North Carolina. Andrew was an avid waterman who was at his happiest behind the wheel of a boat. Andrew and Kathleen spent a large share of their summers on the water with family and a group of lifelong friends on Pomona Lake in Kansas, on Table Rock Lake in Missouri, and on Portage Lake and Lake Michigan in Onekama, Michigan. A skillful pilot and fisherman, Andrew was equally at home helming a houseboat, fishing for salmon in the deep waters of Lake Michigan, or towing his kids and grandkids behind a ski boat. Andrew also enjoyed SCUBA diving in Florida and the Keys with family and friends. Andrew is survived by his wife Kathleen, brother John W. Mackie III (Joy), sister Allison Kerr Mackie Haworth (Gary), daughters Linda Mackie McCall (Jonathan) and Susan Mackie Chang (Bailey), and five grandchildren: Adrian Dale McCall, Thomas Andrew McCall, Miriam Elizabeth Chang, Enoch Euling Chang, and Ruth Anne Chang. Services for Andrew will be held on 11:00 AM on December 15, 2025, at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 4415 Pleasant Grove Church Road, Raleigh, NC, 27613. At Andrew’s request, his ashes will be interred in Pittsburg, Kansas, at a later date. Gifts in Andrew’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Transitions LifeCare Hospice, and Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.
